Savvy brides choose Moissanite

When it comes to diamond alternatives including moissanite, no one knows them better than we do.  After all, we’ve been experts in diamond simulants through our store Diamontrigue of Lubbock since 1978.  When we launched our Custom Design Center, Royal Hummingbird Studio, located inside Diamontrigue in 2015, we wanted to offer a full range of diamond alterntives, including Moissanite.

So what is it?

Moissanite (silicon carbide) was discovered by Nobel Prize-winning chemist, Dr. Henri Moissan, in a meteorite crater in 1893.  With properties exceeding that of a diamond, moissanite was a brilliant new type of gemstone, free of environmental and ethical issues.   The experts at Charles & Colvard pioneered the creation of Moissanite in a lab refining their technique over their 20 year history.   Today, you can purchase this incredibly brilliant gemstone in G-H and DEF diamond grades, which are colorless and near colorless.

Wait, wasn’t Moissanite a yellow-greenish color?

Once upon a time, in the early years, it had a yellow-greenish tint to it – but no more!  At Royal Hummingbird, we won’t settle for anything but clear, fiery brilliance, so we are proud to offer Charles & Colvard Forever One.  You can choose from a GH grade (near colorless) or DEF (colorless).  Those alphabet letters look familiar?  They are the same color grades used in genuine diamonds.

But do they sparkle like diamonds?

Moissanite has even greater brilliance and much more dispersion (fire) than a diamond.  It is the next hardest gem after diamonds and is a 9.25 on the Mohl hardness scale, so they are a wonderful durable alternative.
